If you have ever wondered what it would be like to dye your pug, check out these pictures.

I have been fascinated with the whole Panda Dog thing since I saw it last year and thought that pugs would make ideal pandas because they already have the cute panda face so all you'd have to dye is the hair on their legs and back.

In case you didn't know...pugs have two coats, a top coat and an under coat. The undercoat took they dye pretty well but the top coat didn't take the color at all. The effect I ended up with is what you see in the pics. I'll probably just end up making him a panda costume for Halloween but I have to give it a try.

In case you are wondering I took him to a professional groomer and the special fur dye for dogs was used. The groomer put two coats on him. He was a pretty good sport about it. The second time around he got a little testy.

Baby Jax was found in a crate on the side of the road with his mom and four siblings just before New Year's. Volunteers with Central Florida Pug Rescue picked up the dogs, nursed them back to health and found them new homes, but a few weeks later Jax was back in the vet's office suffering seizures. He was fine again for about another week, and the same thing occurred. Blood work was done and it was discovered he had a liver shunt, a genetic defect that prevents his liver from functioning correctly and causes toxins to back up in his body.

With surgery, Jax "should have a normal happy pug life" with his adoptive family, says Wendi Wilcox with Central Florida Pug Rescue. But the operation costs about $4,000. So far, pug friends have raised nearly $2,900, but another $1,000 is needed.

Without the surgery, Jax won't live more than a year or two.

On Saturday May 30, Central Florida Pug Rescue will hold a benefit "Pedaling for Pugs" bike ride to raise money for Jax's surgery. (7:30 a.m. registration, 8 a.m. ride time. Location: Seminole Wekiva Trail, San Sebastian Prado trailhead. I-4 to exit 92, head west about 1.5 miles on route 436 and look for the well marked trailhead on north side of road. $10 donation per rider.)

In addition, the group welcomes all donations, large or small. Checks may be made out to "CFPR" and sent to P.O. Box 953744, Lake Mary, FL 32795 or contributions may be made by credit/debit card at www.centralfloridapugrescue.org (click on the "Help Baby Jax" donation button on the front page).

I love stories like this. An 80lb black lab mix Hoagie is injured when he jumps in to save his owner from a mountain lion. Hoagie's owner, William Morse, was hiking with his wife near Blue Jay campground in the Cleveland National Forest, about 10 miles from Lake Elsinore, when a 120-pound mountain lion approached. Scary!!

I'm sure if I were in the same boat my vicious attack pug Tyson would do the same.

Pugs Can Fly the Friendly Skies

I love this concept! There is a new airline dedicated exclusively to pet travel. No longer are our beloved furry family members treated as cargo. They now ride comfortably in the main cabin safely and securely on Pet Airways.

Here is their promise:

Pug Coat Care

Let's start care of your Pug with the fur. Brush your Pug with a brush that has stainless steel bristles once a week. This will help cut down on the fur in the house as well as keep your Pug looking neat. But don't expect miracles - Pugs shed a ton! In the summer, when we brush our fawn Pug, it looks like he's smoking as the fur is flying off.

Some folks brush their Pug everyday because it helps reduce the amount of fur in the
house. Pugs usually enjoy being brushed and many look forward to it. Simply brush in the direction the fur grows without pressing down too hard on the brush. Use smooth, even and gentle strokes.

As far as bathing goes, a lot of folks like to bath their Pugs every other week to once per month. The choice is yours based on how active your Pug is. Personally, we do every other week in the summer and once per month in the winter.

Pug Face Wrinkle Care

Here's one of the critical components of Pug care. The folds and crinkles on a Pug's face are magnets for gook! This stuff gets in there because Pugs spend a lot of time with their face in their food bowl, outside in the grass, etc. Plus, the face wrinkles collect a cocktail of dried tears and mucous...yum!

Clean those facial folds to make sure they don't develop any infections or fungus. We've had a couple infections with our fawn Pug, and while it's not a big deal to fix (non-prescription pads from the vet did the trick), you're best approach is to not let it happen in the first place. Since all that gook makes a Pug smell a bit "yucky", you've got extra motivation to clean the wrinkles regularly.

Cleaning the facial folds is easy if you've got a cooperative dog. Our black Pug is a bit of a baby when it comes to this...he constantly turns his face around to avoid the wipes! Best advice is to start cleaning the folds when they're a puppy so they get used to it.

You'll need a baby wipe that's non-alcoholic / non-scented. Hold the Pug firmly and gently run the wipe in the folds above the nose and below the eyes. Continue until the wipe is clean after running through the wrinkles. Finally, apply a very thin layer of Vaseline inside the fold above the nose the give some protection and healing to this sensitive area. I'd recommend doing this once per week or once every other week at the latest.

Pug Toe Nails

Pugs nails grow fast and you'll quickly find your Pug has some awfully sharp nails. This can be no fun if your Pug is a jumper or you have small children in the house.

There are a few options to trim the Pug's nails. You can clip ‘em, you can Dremel ‘em (a Dremel is a small power tool that has a sander attachment) or you can punt this task to a professional groomer or vet (see, there's an easy way out!). Clippers are less hassle but you run the risk of cutting the toe's vein if you're not too careful.

One of the best times to trim nails this is when your Pug is deeply asleep. They won't put up much of a struggle and they tend to be very relaxed. To avoid cutting too far down on the nail, clip just the curved part of the nail.

A Pug needs their nails trimmed every two to three weeks. There's more than an occasional scratch to you if you don't do this...Pug nails that grow too long can cause bleeding and breakdown of the pasterns on the paws, which will cause your Pug pain when walking.

Note added by Jody: I walk my pug for 20 minutes 2 to 3 times a day, everyday. I never have to trim his nails. The walks alone keep his nails nice and trim.

Pug Ears

Use a baby wipe or a damp cloth. Gently wipe clean only the areas of the ear that you can see....don't go too deep! Think what it would be like for somebody to do the same thing to you and that will help you measure the depth correctly. Clean the ears as frequently as they appear dirty. Our fawn gets dirty ears and needs cleaning once per month, while our black Pug hardly ever needs ear cleaning.

Jody's notes: I use these cleaning pads to clean Tyson's ears:

Pug Teeth

Pugs need their teeth brushed just like humans! There are two options - have your vet do it (easy answer!) or try it yourself. Again, it's best to start this when they're puppies to make it a habit.

Buy a dog toothbrush (they make them special) and dog toothpaste from your pet shop, and go to work like you were brushing the teeth of a small child. I know it sounds strange, but it's a pretty easy task and some Pugs even look forward to it! Check with your vet on how often to do this, but I tend to do this every 2 to 3 months for my Pugs.

Note added by Jody: My pug HATES this. So I take him into the groomer and get it done for $10 every month or so. If you don't wanna spend $10 every week or month. Check out this bone:

This is a horrible story! I had no idea about drying cages. I am so glad I read this story. Now I know to check with any groomers I take Tyson to to see if they use drying cages. Pugs can die from being exposed to high temperatures and clearly this is what happened to this poor little pug.

A black Pug

Origins

The Pug breed originates in East China, during the 1600-1046 BC period. This breed got popular in the Tibetan temples and was later on brought to Japan.

During the 17th century, in Europe, the Pugs got imported by merchants, in Netherlands. The merchants also spred the breed all across Europe, from England (1688) to Spain, France, Germany. It was one of the favorite royalty pet, portrayed by many painters and artists.

The pugs arrived in United States during the 19th century and was present in many dog shows. Nowadays, the Pugs are seen in many dog shows, and used for tracking people and animals.

The Pug has various names: Carlin, Dutch Bulldog, Mini Mastiff, Mops, Puggu, Chinese Pug, and Puglets for puppies.

Appearance

The Pug belongs to the small dog breeds category, with a height of 25-27 cm and a weight of 6-9 kg, with small differences for females. It is also preffered as a toy dog.

The Pug has a small body, but the musculature is strong and sturdy. The body form is compact and square. The legs are straight and small, moderate in length, ending in pads, with black nails and split toes.

The face is kind of funny and interesting to observe. The Pugs lack a long muzzle (the face is flat, blunt), so the respiratory system is also compact. Most Pug dogs have a type of fur wrinkles all over the face, around the eyes and under the muzzle and mouth. The ears are folded on the sides. The eyes are large and protruding, colored in black.

The coat is sleek and short, glossy and fine and the color varies from black, silver, fawn and apricot, with several markings on the ears and face.

Grooming

This is a major concern, especially for fawn Pugs (who have both overcoat and undercoat). There is a variation when speaking of the shedding seasonality. Most Pugs shed all year round, but this can be lowered using a proper diet, coat trimming, special shampoo for the fur and brushing the dead hair on a daily basis.

Also, Pugs need a special care attention to the face area: cleaning the eyes and face wrinkles is a way to avoid any eye infections and skin problems that could appear.

Health Facts

The Pugs have a lifespan of 11-13 years. These dogs can be prone to several health problems, ranging from eye infections and lesions (entropion, cataracts, scratched cornea), respiratory issues (reverse sneezing - not harmful; lack of air), brain lesions (brain inflammations - PDE - pug dog encephalitis), spine malformations (hemivertebrae - a congenital vertebral anomaly with serious neurologic effects), skin problems (demodex mange).

The Pugs can also develop an intolerance to several medical drugs and vaccines; also, the hot weather can cause heatstrikes, rashes and skin burns.

Temperament and Lifestyle

The Pug looks funny and acts playful. It adapts to any living environment, being sociable and really suitable for small children. A Pug isn’t fit to be a guard dog, due to the size and lack of aggressivity and the interest for all things that surround him.

The Pugs respond well for any dog obedience training efforts. They respond to a low voice tonality.

I know this all too well. When I set out to adopt/rescue a dog I knew I wanted a pug. I did spend two years looking for the perfect one but it was worth it! I used Petfinder but had no luck. I eventually got Tyson from a family on Craigslist. They moved to Los Angeles from Hong Kong and brought him with them. Once here they realized they did not want him anymore. So not only did I get a pug, I got an authentic Chinese pug. I even had to learn Cantonese to speak to him. Owning him has been a wonderful and gratifying challenge.

If your heart’s in the right place, you understand the value of adopting rather than buying a pet. But what if that same heart is set on a particular breed?

Despite what you might think, that’s no reason to give up on adoption, says Betsy Saul, founder of Petfinder.com. “People are surprised to hear 25 percent of pets in shelters are purebred,” she says.

It may seem like the odds of finding a particular breed in a shelter are low — but the good news is that most breeds have specific groups devoted to their rescue. In fact, shelters often transfer purebreds to such groups to free up space in their own facilities.

On Petfinder.com, you can search shelters and rescue groups by breed for 241 breeds of pet — for the most popular dog breeds, the numbers available nationwide are generally in the thousands. The American Kennel Club Web site lists rescue contacts for all but seven of their 161 recognized dog breeds.

Matt and Alexandra Edwards of Alexandria, Va., were so happy with the Mid-Atlantic Pug Rescue group they used it twice. They wanted another dog when their pug Sophie seemed depressed after their first pug Max passed away.

Potential owners often assume that rescue pets were given up because there’s something wrong with them, but Edwards is just as happy with his dogs as with the adoption process.

“You kind of wonder if the first time you just kind of lucked out, because Sophie was so wonderful,” he says, “but then we adopted Pugsly and he’s just as great.”

Amy Lane, rescue chair of Mid-Atlantic Pug Rescue, says that the problems that land pets in shelters are generally with the owners, not the animals.

“Sometimes it’s unavoidable; sometimes it’s people who just didn’t want to go the distance,” she says.

Still, no dog is perfect, or perfect for every owner. The trick is to make the right match, and that’s why the process of adoption can seem a bit daunting at first.

Rescue groups will generally have fairly substantial forms to fill out, require personal and vet references, and conduct phone and home interviews. It’s all designed to make sure that dogs find the right people and people find the right dogs.

The first step for the rescue group is educating potential adopters about the breed. Many people don’t realize that pugs shed, for example, or that, while adult pugs are renowned couch potatoes, saying that you want a calm pug puppy is “an oxymoron of the worst kind,” says Lane.

Because rescue groups see so many dogs surrendered, they know what causes problems and what makes a good match. And since most groups are all-volunteer and foster dogs in their own homes, someone has lived with your prospective pet and knows all about his habits and personality.

One advantage of adopting an adult dog is that their personalities are more fully developed than a puppy’s, so you have a clearer idea of what you’re getting.

But expect a process of getting accustomed to a new home; after six to eight weeks, you should be able to see what the chemistry between dogs and family members will be for the long term, says Lane. For dogs who have been neglected or had other troubles, there may be more changes for the better over time.

The Edwards saw the seven year old Pugsly become much more self-confident and sociable over the course of his first year with them. Says Alexandra, “It’s been awesome to see him come out of his shell.”

What to expect from a good purebred rescue group:
#1 Look for a group that’s a registered nonprofit or in the process of becoming one; it’s an indication of a certain level of organization and stability.

#2 There should be a rigorous evaluation process for adopters. It’s needed both for the safety of the animals and the long term success of the match between you and your pet.

#3 Have patience: These groups are generally run by busy volunteers with jobs and families.

#4 The group should be upfront about the animal’s potential problems, provide medical records where available and have you sign a clear adoption contract.

#5 A good group will provide follow up help. Many volunteers are also interested in keeping up with their former foster pets.

Pugs’ adoption is free

YUCCA VALLEY — In February, two pug mix brothers, Moses and Squint, became homeless after their owner died. They were brought to the Yucca Valley Animal Shelter in hopes of being placed together into another loving home.

“Both dogs are about 9 years old but they still have the heart and desire to enjoy life,” said shelter worker Linda Wright.

Moses and Squint get along well with other dogs, do not bark much, are housebroken and both have been neutered for quite some time.

There is no charge for their adoption. They have received their annual vaccinations but each will need a rabies vaccine.

“Moses and Squint are quite the gentlemen and deserve to live out their life being loved and cared for,” Wright said.

She and fellow shelter workers are hoping someone will adopt Moses and Squint before their time runs out at the animal shelter.

For information on adopting Moses and Squint, call the shelter at 760-365-3111. The shelter is open noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

Three boys recovered a runaway pug this past Monday after the pet's owner lost control of three dogs after being struck in an intersection by an elderly female driver at Thalia and Glenneyre Streets near 6 p.m. Photographer Jeff LeFever fetched a camera in time to capture the Samaritans' success, but not their names. Police said the injured man was transported to South Coast Medical Center, and that one of the animals was also slightly injured in the accident.

Honda unveils dog-friendly car

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dog-crazy Americans will soon be able to buy a pet-friendly car with a cushioned dog bed in the trunk, fitted with a built-in water bowl and fan and a ramp to help less agile dogs climb in.

With the help of a rescue dog named Sammy, Japanese car maker Honda Motor Co unveiled the pet friendly version of its Element utility vehicle at the New York Auto Show.

It features easy-wash seat covers, a fitted dog bed with restraints to keep Sammy safe in the event of a crash, and a paw logo on the side. Honda said the car would go on sale across the United States from the fall of this year.

Honda spokesman Sage Marie said it was designed with both safety and comfort in mind. "(It's) a car we think is of interest to many of today's dog-crazy consumers," he said.

Kyle Schwab of Smashface Rescue - Dog Behaviorist Review

As many of you know (that have been reading my blog) I have a very naughty pug and have been trying all sorts of techniques and tools to overcome his bad behaviors.

I found Kyle Schwab's ad on Craigslist this past September, he advertised his services as a dog behaviorist and he specializes in pit bulls and mastiffs. I have been looking for a reasonably priced behaviorist to work with for a while. I have been quoted prices from $1500-$3000 (for "camp") to $300 (for one hour) to $150 (for 90 minutes) to Kyle's rate at $135 (for 2+ hours). I decided to email him.

When dealing with things you find on Craigslist, you never really know what you are going to get since it is so unregulated.

After a few bumps in the road with scheduling, Kyle and I finally met and began to work on Tyson the terrible. He brought along his giant black mastiff type dog called Ninja. She looked terrible but was a real sweetheart.

After working with Tyson for almost a year, we have over come many of his bad behaviors. He used to lunge at all people and children, nip you on your chin and just be unruly. He did not know how to walk on a leash and had little obedience. I have worked through all of those issues now and his final problems that remain are:

Aggression towards people on our floor in the apartment complex.
Aggression towards people in the elevator, riding with us, coming in or leaving.
Aggression towards dogs all dogs on our floor.
Aggression towards all dogs in the elevator.
Aggression towards big dogs while on leash.
Aggression towards all dogs in proximity when giving him a treat.

Kyle helped me to isolate the issues above and to work on one at a time. I need to start at the top of my list and work my way down.

He also helped train me in centering my energy and explaining how my amplified state, whether it be because I was running or excited or mad channels to the dog and makes him strike our against me or the nearest dog to him. Which I totally understand from the countless episodes of "Dog Whisperer" that I have watched but I guess I didn't realize that it would also apply if I was out of breath or really happy.

Kyle worked with me on how and when to give proper corrections using the pinch collar. Timing is everything when dealing with aggression and mine pretty much sucks. He also gave me some tips for using the e-collar.

The session only lasted for about an hour and I think we made some progress. At the end Tyson was able to lie down next to Ninja and be cool. Although he did display jealousy when I gave affection to her.

Tyson still needs a lot of work. I really want him to be the calm, cool and intelligent fellow that I know and love at home for all dogs and people everywhere. I hope that with the tips I got from Kyle, I will be able to make some progress.

Six family members organize a sting to steal a pug puppy. Although stealing is very wrong, I can see how the cuteness of a pug would overcome someone's better judgment. In this case, the entire family came under the spell of a pug.

If a dog is too expensive and brings you to the point of stealing.... go to a pure breed rescue group or try Crigslist, like me. There are cheaper ways of obtaining these cute creatures without resorting to theft.
